Course Details


The graduate program in Oral Medicine and Radiology is designed to provide extensive diagnostic and therapeutic skills to undergraduates and postgraduate students in diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of oral and perioral diseases, and management of systemic diseases that have a significant impact on the health and function of the tissues of the mouth and adjacent structures.

The Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology have Undergraduate, Postgraduate and PhD programs.

UNDER GRADUATE PROGRAM

The educational program is comprised of a broad range of didactic and clinical activities imparted to third and final year students as per the norms set by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences.

Course is delivered in the form of lectures and, practical training in the form of topic discussions, case recording & discussions, and also, hands on training in Radiology. The course includes 150 hours of clinical posting and 65 hours of lectures, over a period of two years. Periodic evaluation of students is done in the form of class tests and internal assessments. Students are encouraged to participate and are trained to present scientific papers and posters at various scientific forums. As part of a one year rotatory internship students are posted here for a month to apply their developed skills in case recording diagnosis and radiology under supervision and allowed to execute the treatments.

POST GRADUATE PROGRAM

The department offers a postgraduate training course of three year duration, which is designed to produce postgraduates who are thoroughly trained in the fundamentals of the discipline, and ready to pursue academic, research and/or private practice career. The course follows the norms set by the RGUHS. Training is imparted in the form of topic discussions, case presentations and discussions, seminars, journal club presentations, radiographic demonstrations & discussions. Students attend peripheral postings at KIDWAI Memorial Institute of Oncology, NIMHANS, and Sevashram Hospital and our Sagar Hospital for advanced imaging procedures. Students are encouraged and guided to participate and present scientific papers & posters at State, National, International conferences & workshops.Our postgraduates participate in Implantology discussions using CBCT analysis and also place implants, Lasers is another important aspect of learning in this course. Forensic sciences and TMD management are other highlights of the program.

Periodic assessment tests are conducted to monitor the progress of the students. Two Mock (1 internal & 1 external) exams are conducted prior to the final university examinations. Students also have to participate in rural and urban dental camps as part of their course work.It is mandatory to complete a Library Dissertation and a Thesis based on original research before they are awarded a degree. At the end of the training, the candidate is able to acquire adequate knowledge and skills pertaining to the discipline while inculcating the right attitude.

PhD PROGRAM

The Department has been recognised as a centrefor PhD program by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences .The course includes making a research proposal which is put forward to a Committee, which, on approval a pre-PhD examination is conducted at the end of the first year, the curriculum for which includes mainly research methodologies . Once the study is completed, a dissertation will be submitted followed by an open defense of the research work, on completion of which the degree will be awarded

The PhD program has a duration of five years, and currently three PhD scholars are pursuing their research under the supervision of the guide Dr. Chaya M David.
